Lessons with Michael
Michael specializes in teaching jazz/blues, pop/rock and classical music to students aged 11 and up. He incorporates modern and classical techniques, as well as ear training and music theory into his comprehensive approach. He is able to tailor his teaching to the goals and interests of each student by drawing on his diverse musical background.

Description
Piano:
Michael is happy to teach all genres of music, and wants to give you pieces that actually excite you! He employs both modern and classical teaching methods, emphasizing proper technique and posture to reduce body strain, and to achieve greater facility on the instrument.
Michael tailors his teaching to the goals and interests of each student, drawing on his diverse musical background. He transmits a wealth of knowledge and passion for music. Whether you are looking to start a new hobby, returning to the instrument after a long absence, or looking to refine your existing skills and knowledge, he can help! Michael brings over 16 years experience as a teacher, and more than 25 as a pianist and organist.
Hammond B3 Organ:
On the organ, Michael is well-versed in jazz, blues, gospel, funk, and pop styles, having performed on the instrument for more than 14 years. He is proficient on the bass pedals, knowledgeable in drawbar registrations, and experienced in using a variety of techniques on the instrument to musical effect.
Music Theory Tutoring:
Michael is extremely adept at music theory and skilled at to breaking down complicated concepts into understandable language.
Transcription:
Michael is an expert at music transcription, having spent hundreds of hours learning music by ear. Learn the songs you’ve always wanted to, but could never find quality sheet music for!
He can create accurate lead sheets (notated melody and chord symbols) as well as note-for-note transcriptions of recordings. Contact me for examples.
Bio:
Michael performs regularly with some of the best jazz musicians in Maine and New Hampshire, and served as a faculty member of Bates College from 2016-2022. He has played at numerous venues including the State Theatre, Merrill Auditorium, and Port City Music Hall. Michael graduated summa cum laude with a degree in Piano Performance (Jazz Concentration), from the University of Southern Maine, where he was named Presser Scholar. He studied with many acclaimed musicians including Thomas Snow, Laura Kargul, Ben Waltzer, and Vardan Ovsepian.
Michael has extensive experience as a church musician, including serving as the music director of West Kennebunk United Methodist Church from 2013-2015 and temporary organist at the Bridgton Congregational Church in 2022. He is particularly drawn to African American gospel music. As an instructor, Michael has enjoyed teaching a variety of students since 2008.
